QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLSJob Responsibilities: Duties:- 1. Triaging (is a process of prioritizing patients based on the severity of their condition) of all the patients coming to ER. 2. They will examine all the patients who come to the Casualty Department thoroughly and record the same, keeping in mind the following medical parameters of the patient. a. The general condition of the patient and the level of consciousness. b. The vital functions - Pulse Rate, Blood Pressure, Respiratory Rate, Temperature & Peripheral Pulsation. c. Based on history provided they will make a thorough systematic examination of the patient. d. For patients with injuries they will examine all wounds and make a note of the type of wound, the location, and size of the wound. 3. Having examined the patient they will proceed as follows: a. Minor ailments or injuries: They will treat the patient, dress/suture the wound, and prescribe medication. b. Seriously ill patients: Then will start resuscitation, supportive treatment and inform the concerned Registrar on duty depending on the type of illness and seek assistance. c. In case they have to contact a Consultant over the phone, they will do so after examining the patient, so that they are in a position to give a correct description of the condition of the patient. d. When a patient has been referred to the Hospital by a Consultant by an outside Doctor, they will admit the patient directly after examining the patient and recording his/her findings and also inform the concerned Registrar on duty about the admission. In case the patientu2019s condition is serious, they will inform and seek the assistance of the concerned Registrar on duty. They will also inform the Consultant about the admission of such cases and brief him about the condition of the patient at the time of admission and take advice. 4. Whenever the Casualty Medical Officer receives advance information about a seriously ill patient being sent to the Casualty Department of the Hospital, they will alert all the concerned people viz. the transport department, the Consultant (if he is in the hospital), Registrar, the Casualty Nurse and the ward to which the patient may be admitted. 5. Whenever a patient is to be admitted in the hospital from the Casualty, the Medical Officer will alert the concerned ward about the admission and inform the condition of the patient, to enable the ward to prepare for the admission. 6. They will examine, treat and admit under the care of the concerned consultant all medico u2013 legal cases by making proper entries in the relevant registers and certificates kept in the department and follow all procedures laid down for such cases. 7. They will admit the patient under the concerned Consultant. 8. Any other duties assigned to him/her as and when required in the interest of the organization. 9. They should not hesitate to take the assistance of the Registrars/ Consultant on duty whenever needed. 10. They may be required to appear in court and give evidence in medico u2013 legal cases. 11. Medico u2013 Legal Cases: a. Any patient brought with an injury, burns, poisoning, drug overdose, tetanus, and septic abortion or in an unconscious state, all cases of sudden death, where the cause of death is unknown, and where a patient is bought dead to the Hospital will be considered as a medico u2013 legal case. b. Proper records of all injuries sustained and the patientu2019s clinical status must be maintained in the relevant records available in the department. Any notes that are scored off must always be initialed. c. Initiate and complete appropriate MLC procedures and to ensure that MLC affidavit is passed on to the security personnel as soon as possible. Additional Duties: 12. To facilitate all necessary investigation (Lab, Biochemical and Radiological). 13. To assist the patient in necessary admission procedures in liaison with PRE & Administrators. 14. To facilitate the transfer of admitted patient into the appropriate ICUs/ wards. 15. Liaising with appropriate staff in other areas. 16. Supervision of Nursing/ Emergency Medical Technician personnel and assist them. 17. Working in close coordination with the HOD and follow the instructions given. 18. To ensure that informed consent is taken for all emergency procedures. 19. Should be aware of code blue process. Required Knowledge: - Theoretical & practical knowledge of all emergency medical conditions & medico legal procedures. Required Skills: - u2022 Airway Management IV access u2022 Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation Skills (CPR), Basic Life Support & Advanced Cardiac Life Support (BLS & ACLS) & Advanced Trauma life Support (ATLS). u2022 Strong interpersonal communication u2022 Clinical competence and a commitment to life-long learning u2022 A u201ccool headu201d in emergency situations u2022 Respect for the patients autonomy and good relations with the colleagues, and observance of professional ethics. Role Complexity:- Wide variety of tasks, patient management, supervision, control and coordination with staff and other consultants and staff. Interpersonal Relation: - Coordinate with PRE, nursing, pharmacy, and with other departments. Supervisory Skills: - Supervising the patientu2019s condition during the patients stay in ER. Supervision of emergency medical technician and nursing staff. Independent Judgment: - While dealing with the CPR and life saving procedures and then accordingly seeking appropriate consultant referrals. Leadership Responsibility: - Includes supervision, motivating, directing and coordinating the entire ER manpower and handling critical medico legal cases. Working conditions: - Responsible to handle emergencies, checking rules & framework of legal aspects in case of accidents and provide quality medical care. Impact and Consequences of error: - Error can result to loss of Life; health hazards for patients. Reporting: - Reporting directly to HOD and indirectly to Administrator. Reports/ Records: - a) Patient History All files are handed over to MRD. b) Legal Documentation
